Women’s rugby league is headed to more provinces this year following the official launch of the 2026 Santos Cup draw by the Papua New Guinea National Rugby League Competition (PNGNRLC).
Entering its third season, the country’s premier women’s competition will expand its footprint for the eight-round tournament, scheduling matches across Port Moresby, Lae, Rabaul, Goroka, and Minj.
The season officially kicks off on July 11 and 12, immediately following the mid-year representative window. Six elite franchises will contest the title: reigning premiers Gas Resources Central Dabaris, Bintangor Goroka Lahanis, Lae Snax Tigers, Wamp Nga Mt. Hagen Eagles, ENB Agmark Gurias, and Moni Plus NCDC Pom Vipers.
Fans will see an immediate blockbuster in Round 1, which features a grand final rematch between the Central Dabaris and the Goroka Lahanis.
Organizers have also aligned the schedule with the broader local rugby league ecosystem. Several matches will run as double-headers alongside the SP PNG Hunters and the Digicel ExxonMobil Cup, while Round 5 (August 8–9) has been designated as the “Women in League Round.”
The top four teams will book a spot in the semi-finals on September 6 in Port Moresby, ahead of the Grand Final at the National Football Stadium on September 13.
PNGNRLC Women’s Competition Manager, Urith Toa said, that the competition reflects the continued growth of the women’s game.
“We are excited to provide greater opportunities for our female athletes while allowing fans to witness the skill, passion and commitment that exists throughout women’s rugby league in Papua New Guinea.”
