THE Divine Word University (DWU) Rabaul Campus ushered in its 30th year anniversary celebrations yesterday with a colorful float procession through Kokopo town, marking the first leg of a jam-packed two-day program.
The two-hour convoy, which took to the streets from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM, consisted of approximately ten vehicles. It kicked off from Kabaleo Teachers College, wound its way past the roundabout at Kokopo Secondary School, and concluded at Takubar.
Crowds along the route were treated to interactive and educational displays by the campus students.
Nursing students from St. Mary’s School of Nursing (SMSON) captured public attention by demonstrating live cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques on a mannequin, alongside exhibits showcasing various medical supplies and training tools utilized in their health science programs.
Meanwhile, student teachers from the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (OLSH) Kabaleo Primary Teacher Education program used the float to highlight the diverse and rewarding career pathways unlocked through professional teacher education.
Yesterday’s procession set the stage for the main anniversary celebrations today, which mark 30 years of excellence for both SMSON (Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences) and OLSH Kabaleo (Faculty of Education). The day’s events will commence with a Eucharistic Mass to be held at the OLSH Kabaleo Mass Hall.
The Rabaul Campus festivities form part of nationwide commemorations for Divine Word University’s broader diamond anniversary. This year, the institution is celebrating its 30th anniversary as a university under the theme “Serving the nation with quality education over 30 years.”
Having originally started as a high school and later operating as the Divine Word Institute, the institution was officially granted full university status under the Divine Word University Act on August 21, 1996. Since its inception, DWU has continually expanded its reach and educational services, helping to shape the careers of generations of Papua New Guineans.
