Fourteen men from Karimui LLG in Simbu have been formally charged for killing of a man allegedly involved in the practicing sorcery.

All 14 men were charged with one count each for ‘willful murder on account of accusation of sorcery’ under the Criminal Code Act.

Simbu Police Commander, Superintendent Rubiang Manzuc said each of the men were cautioned and their charges read to them before they were formally charged.

”Investigators have completed the files, and the suspects will appear in court this week,” said PPC Rubiang.

Police report states that on Saturday, 11th July 2026, the 14 men armed themselves with offensive weapons and entered Wenaiyo Village, Ward No.03 in the Karimui LLG. There, they seriously assaulted several people and murdered the elderly man.

The deceased was a 72-year-old man who was captured, locked up, and allegedly tortured by the 14 men.

The police report further stated that the deceased, 72-year-old Peter Julai, was accused of “practicing sorcery” alongside his younger brother, Setty, and his two sons, who were also victimized but survived.

“Mr. Julai tragically died from severe blood loss the same day, while the survivors were rescued by locals and taken to the hospital,” said PPC Manzuc.

A Mobile Squad police unit deployed from Lae assisted in arresting the suspects, who are now awaiting their court dates.

“I want to thank police management for their support in providing transport that led to the rescue of the victims and the arrest of the suspects. Those who have been charged will appear in court this week, as all court files are ready,” PPC Manzuc said.
