After detecting significant leakages along aging Rouna to Mt. Eriama water pipelines, Water PNG Limited has announced that emergency repair work will begin on the evening of Friday 31st July 2026.

The assessment on the network of waterpipes confirmed active leakages of 13.5 to 15 kilometers long and that is prompting Water PNG to implement emergency stabilization measures while maintaining water production and supply to customers.

Water PNG Chief Executive Officer, James Young said the repair work is necessarily to protect a major pipeline failure and protect Port Moresby’s water supply.

“The pipelines constructed in the 1960s, have served the city for more than six decades. Recent inspections identified corrosion and structural deterioration in several sections, requiring immediate interventions, “ Young said.

The repair work is expected to last between 48 to 64 hours and Port Moresby and nearby Central Province residents are advised to store water to use during this time.

Young said specialized materials and equipment have been sourced to support the repair works and Water PNG is working closely with the government and customary landowners in order to complete repair works.

“Protecting the integrity of the Port Moresby’s water supply system remains our highest priority,” said Young.

Water PNG said in a statement the water supply level will drop to 40 per cent of the normal levels and information on the water rationing schedules will be provided as the dates near.
