People in Malo Village of New Ireland have now chosen to break political barriers and choose service over politics.

In a recent gathering in Malo Village in the Matalai LLG in Namatanai, the Community witnessed the opening of a double classroom by Namatanai MP, Walter Schnaubelt.

The Namatanai MP and Civil Aviation Minister were given a traditional welcome ceremony signifying their entrance into the area.

During the opening of the double classroom for Malo Primary School, MP Schnaubelt said the future of the Province depends on the investment by levels of Government for children to be educated in a better environment.

“I’m not here for politics, but to serve and ensure services reach people in our communities” said MP Schnaubelt.

“It’s for the future generation of Malo who deserve to have a proper classroom”, he added.

The double classroom cost K60,000 and would be used by Grade 7 and 8 students.

The Namatanai MP also committed K50,000 for the construction of teachers houses and a school library. Schnaubelt also pledged around K80,000 for schools in the area. These include Malo Primary, Malo Elementary and a Phonics Early Learning Centre.

Malo Head teacher, Bernadine Neantal, thanked the Namatanai District Development Authority for the timely funding to see the double classroom completed and ready for use.

Mrs. Neantal said the school is a Level 4 institution and the Upper Primary will benefit from the new classroom.

“We are privileged to be supported by the Namatanai DDA for change and progress for our children”, said the Head Teacher.

A K10,000 commitment was also made for an aid post in Malo.

A Community representative said for a very long time no government funding was allocated to assist improve health services in the area.

Malo Aid Post Chairman, Tomarum Emes said not only education is important but health is also equally important. Emes said the funding will surely improve the status of the Aid Post for people to access health services in this part of New Ireland.

He said they will utilize the K10,000 to build a new maternity wing and immunization room.

Rubber farmers in North Fly District of Western Province will now enjoy an increase in rubber prices.

As of 1st April the farm gate rubber price increased to K2.00 per kilo.

Chairman and North Fly MP, James Donald confirmed this, saying the reason of the increase is self-explanatory as per the Joint Announcement Notice by North Fly Rubber Limited Chairman, Warren Dutton.

“This is the second time in the history of rubber price in North Fly with the previous between 2006 and 2007.

“Imagine the weight of 1000 kilograms will see farmers earn K2,000, “said MP Donald.

MP Donald urged rubber farmers to embrace the crop by planting more rubber trees to earn a decent income.

He said economically, farmers will benefit to meet other daily cost like paying school fees and medical expenses.

Donald said the North Fly DDA will continue to support the work of North Fly Rubber Limited (NFRL) in promoting the sustainable growth of rubber in the electorate.

“We will continue to improve with the aim to break the poverty cycle in every village, homes and families,” said MP Donald.

North Fly District in Western Province is one area in the country heavily involved in rubber production over the course of the past 5 years.

Police in New Ireland have increased the scope of elections awareness by discussing election security in schools in Kavieng District.

For a maritime province, the election awareness will be a challenge as 54 % of the population live on the mainland while 46% live on scattered islands.

New Ireland Police Boss, Chief Inspector, Felix Nebanat said the school awareness campaign is one approach to reaching a wider population on Election Security.

“We also need good vehicles capable of hitting the rugged road of the West Coast of New Ireland,” Mr Nebanat said.

With logistical and limited man power challenges, respresentatives from each police station in New Ireland underwent a Training of Trainers workshop with the aim to share their knowledge upon returning to their designated areas of operations.

“We aim to train all our police personnel to conduct election awareness and I believe this is the best positive way given our many challenges,” said Mr Nebanat.

200 auxillary police will be part of the Natel Security Operations in New Ireland.

“We will also be having police personnel coming in from East New Britain to assist us,” PPC Nebanat said.

The continuous blackouts in the city prompted Newcrest Mining Limited to assist one important non-government organization through the donation of a generator.

The Cheshire Disability Services provides crucial services to people with disabilities both within Port Moresby and surrounding communities. It is a non-government organization that relies solely on donations for its operations.

General Manager of the NGO group, Bernard Ayieko expressed sincere thanks and gratitude for the donation noting the reliable source of electricity required when power is interrupted.

Mr Ayieko said Chesire is an organization that operates like a hospital. The facility does not close down.

“There are carers who work on shift, day and night, meaning that at all times, power has to be on.”

He added that the Cheshire Home has had serious problems including faulty electronic equipment due to the constant blackouts.

Ability Services has received a brand new genset; and appreciation from the Patron, Governor General, Grand Chief Sir Bob Dadae was relayed to Newcrest Mining Limited.

Representative of Newcrest Mining, Mr. Borone Isana, officiated on the occasion, reiterating the Newcrest value of caring about people and working together.

CID Officers in Vanimo, West Sepik Province have arrived in Edwaki area in Telefomin District to assess and report on the killings of four people including two policemen in 2021.

West Sepik Police Commander, Chief Inspector Joe Poema said the area was left volatile and seen as a hotspot since the confrontation between locals and members of the Mobile Squad.

“These assessment reports will assist police in the deployment of the security personnel during the polling period,” said PPC Poema.

The recently established West Sepik Provincial Election Steering Committee is conducting election briefings weekly to ensure policemen and women are taking ownership of the security aspect of the election before going into the campaigning and the polling periods.

“I am taking a bottom-up approach involving Police Station Commanders (PSCs), Officer in Charge (OICs), Section Heads, Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), and other partners in the security planning briefings to ensure they provide us with weekly situation reports,” said PPC Poema.

Meanwhile through District Partnerships, police officers will travel to Telefomin station this week under the sponsorship of Telefomin DDA to conduct awareness and gather intelligent assessment reports.

These officers will remain there until the end of this month.

Lae Pedal Power, a group of 12 young cyclists from Lae city, cycled from Wabag into Maramuni on the 57km unsealed road recently launched by Prime Minister James Marape.

The group travelled to Wabag from Lae with their bicycles on a PMV and then cycled to Maramuni last Friday.

They received a standing ovation from the people of Maramuni for their courage and determination as they pedaled in, waving the flags of Papua New Guinea and Morobe.

Lae Pedal Power is a motley crew of young men from all over Lae city who advocate for peace and unity by cycling around the country.

Pedal Power President, Gabe Bago, from Morobe Patrol Post in the Huon Gulf district, said the cycling group was formed to turn young people away from a life of crime.

“It took us the whole day for the 12 of us Lae boys to cycle from Wabag to Maramuni,” Bago said.

“It was really great to stop at villages along the way to Maramuni and talk with the people, Gabe said.

He added, “We are here to test the new road and promote the message of unity, ‘Wan Kantri’.”

They had intended to travel all the way to East Sepik on the new Enga-Sepik highway but because the road ends at Maramuni, the group will stay on and decide on what to do next.

City Pharmacy Group (CPL) has announced a K23million trading profit.

In a statement, CPL said the Group declares a full and final dividend of 4toea per share after recognizing a K23m trading profit.

This they said is a 15% increase in comparison to 2020, despite increased competition, substantial surges in the cost of purchases, freight costs and Covid-19.

Total Group sales were 0.3% lower than 2020, yet the business was able to exceed the prior year’s trading profit whilst maintaining the net gross profit margin in line with 2020.

From its subsidiaries, key brands City Pharmacy generated 12.3% revenue growth compared to 2020 and Hardware Haus successfully attained a 4.2% increase in revenue.

Supermarket brand, Stop & Shop reflected a decline in sales but continues to be the preferred shopping destination in Port Moresby.

Susurunga Primary School in New Ireland has a new hall.

The hall was recently opened by Namatanai MP, Walter Schnaubelt witnessed by students, teachers, school board and locals in Matalai LLG.

The hall is a commitment by the Open MP.

The school hall cost K70,000 and is funded by the Namatanai District Development Authority.

MP Schnaubelt expressed gratitude to the Susurunga school Board and Administration for utilizing the fundS for a vital facility.

“The hall is built as a result of prudent management and priority planning by the school authority”, said MP Schnaubelt.

“This is a classic example of building a better future for our children, the hall must be used wisely for the benefit of students, teachers and the local community”, said MP Schnaubelt.

The Namatanai MP said if schools in the District perform to expectations by using funding intended for development and improve learning, the DDA will step in to assist in building schools.

Susurunga School Head Teacher, Bruno Willie thanked the Namatanai DDA for funding the new school hall.

Mr Willie said the project team and local LLG President, Augustine Topi ensured the project was completed successfully.

Willie also mentioned additional projects include a new library, teachers houses, toilets and fencing around the school premises.

Meanwhile, MP Schnaubelt announced a commitment of K100,000 for Susurunga Primary School and K20,000 for Litoron Elementary School.

A recently retired Papua New Guinea Defense Force Soldier on Friday announced his intention to compete in the National General Elections 2022 in the National Capital District.

Chief Warrant Officer, Allan Nanguromo made the announcement in front of family and close friends.

“I have reached the pinnacle of my career in the military, securing the highest rank in the Non Commissioned Officers rank and file.

“It’s now time for me to move on, ” he said.

Nanguromo has spent over thirty seven years with the Papua New Guinea Defense Force.

He joined the force in the 80s’ as a young private and made his way up the ranks.

Chief Warrant Officer is the highest rank among the Non Commissioned Officers rank and file.

The conviction to contest the National General Elections 2022 sprung from reflections on what the future will be like for today’s children.

“Countless leaders have come up with policies after policies that they haven’t lived up to.

“The number of youths who are unemployed continue to rise as we don’t have a plan for them.

“We need to start planning the future of the children who are currently in primary schools.

“We have plans but you can only do so much. Getting into parliament is the only way to push these plans and help secure a sound future for the future generation of PNG.

Nanguromo will contest the Moresby North West Electorate with the theme “For the Children of Tomorrow”.

A Memorandum of Understanding signed today between Nasfund and the Center for Excellence in Financial Literacy (CEFI) is desired to produce advocators of the savings culture.

Sixty (60) employees from Nasfund will undergo a Training of Trainers Program and then provide financial literacy training to over 62,000 Nasfund members.

This program is aimed at equipping and upskilling Nasfund Staff on planning, delivering and monitoring financial literacy for Nasfund members.

The MOU is for a 12 month period and was signed by Nasfund CEO, Ian Tarutia and CEFI Director Saliya Ranasinghe.

“The importance of saving for retirement is a priority for the Fund when engaging with our members right across the country.

“This is why working with CEFI is especially meaningful for our staff to drive financial literacy to our members, ” said Nasfund CEO Mr. Tarutia.
