The Department of Education, through the Flexible Open and Distance Education (FODE) center in Port Moresby signed a Memorandum of Understanding, signifying their partnership with the Ok Tedi Development Foundation (OTDF).

The three – year agreement aims at addressing the department’s guiding principle of “Leaving No Child Behind” strengthens the collaborative effort between OTDF and FODE in delivering FODE services to the mine affected areas of Western Province.

As a registered study center since 2019, OTDF has been collecting fees and meeting costs of satellite centers in the province. With this agreement, OTDF will be meeting full fees and operational costs.
The Education Department through FODE will provide all learning materials, including training and orientation of tutors and administrative support, for the effective delivery of FODE in Western Province.
This initiative has seen students from remote areas, in the province enroll with full correspondence and upgrading programs.

First Assistance Secretary of FODE and Inclusive Education, Andrew Angobe acknowledged the Management of Ok Tedi Development Foundation, for their commitment in providing a pathway for students in the province.
“Please pass our appreciation to the management of Ok Tedi Development Foundation, for investing in education for the people of Western Province.” Angobe said.
He also challenged other resource centers throughout the country to partner with FODE and invest in education.

The Principle of FODE, Anthony Rayappan, also gave his assurance that education materials will be printed and distributed on time.

OTDF Executive Manager Andrew Mari highlighted the challenges they are facing in the province.
This include shortage of trained personnel’s and inadequate infrastructures due to limited funding at the district and provincial level.

He said the objective is to ensure quality and affordable education is made accessible to students. Offering a second chance to those who have discontinued formal education.
“Since 2019, FODE has supported about 4000 students, who have pursued tertiary education and find employment, thus contributing to the human resource development of the province.” he said.

OTDF SUPPORTS SEA TIME TRAINING FOR CADETS

Two New Cadets of Sea Time Training, from Western Province have been inducted into the Ok Tedi Development Foundation (OTDF) Maritime Scholarship Program, in Kiunga Recently.

The cadets, Jacklyn Jeremiah and Sailas Waimona, will now embark on a 24 month Journey, of sea time training aboard P&O vessels.

The training Program is part of OTDF Maritime Scholarship Program, which is delivered in Partnership with Ok Tedi Mining Limited and P&O Maritime Limited.

The Program which commenced in 2013, aims to build human capacity in Western Province while fostering career growth in the maritime industry.

The two cadets were part of the 2022 batch of applicants selected for this Scholarship Program.

They were inducted into the program at the P&O Maritime Kiunga office, by P&O Maritime Health and Safety officer, Superintendent Leo Gideon, and staff from OTDF.

During the induction, Superintendent Gideon highlighted the company’s commitment to safety across its global operations.

The Cadets were also briefed on the P&O Maritime Code of Business Conduct (COBC), which outlines the standard procedures and rules governing their daily operations.

“This induction exercise, serves as a practical guide for maintaining professional relationships with business partners, customers, employees, and communities.” Superintendent Gideon said.

OTDF Program Services Sustainable Manager Andrew Mari said the OTDF Maritime Scholarship Program is open to eligible individuals from Western Province.

“This program presents a remarkable chance for participants to cultivate their maritime careers, enhance interpersonal skills, establish valuable networks, and achieve career goals,” Mari said.

He also encouraged the cadets to become ambassadors for their districts, families, and OTDF, with the aspiration of one day captaining a vessel navigating the Fly River.

OTDF Observes World Environment Day

Staff of OK Tedi Development Foundation (OTDF) recently observed the World Environment Day, in Kiunga Western Province.
In commemorating this year’s World Environment Day, themed “Beat Plastic Pollution” the staff of Ok Tedi Development Foundation (OTDF) cleaned the public road and carpark around the main office area in Kiunga.
As a community development organisation serving the people in Western Province, OTDF values the environment, which is important for the people’s livelihood.

OTDF’s safety coordinator Shane Tarue said observing the day raises awareness on the environment and the effects of human activities on nature and people.
“Many issues relating to climate change and the environment is caused by us so we need to take care of our environment. Air, water and land are essential for human survival.” Tarue said
He said businesses and stakeholders and all citizens should take care of the environment and help reduce plastic pollution in PNG.

Chief Executive Officer Mr. Havini Vira stressed on personal responsibility, where everyone should be cautious of things they do such as throwing out plastic and other rubbish publicly.
He urged families and individuals to continue to play their part in disposing of plastics properly at home and in towns and villages, as it is a way of contributing to saving the environment.
“Safety and environment are OTDF values that underpin our work. We must continue to maintain these standards and eventually influence others to take care of the environment,” He said.

To end the day, all employees together with their families participated in collecting rubbish around their residential areas followed by quizzes and activities for the children.

The World Environment Day was observed on Monday, 5th June. World Environment Day (WED) encourages awareness and action for the protection of the environment. It is supported by many non-governmental organizations, businesses, government entities, and represents the primary United Nations outreach day supporting the environment.

Electronic Library for CHW School

Rumginae School of Community Health Workers (CHW), in Western Province, recently celebrated the opening of its new E-library facility.

It was completed at the cost of K73 000, co-funded by Vega Industries, an Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) supplier, and Ok Tedi Development Foundation (OTDF).

The interactive e-library has over 30 million resource materials that will benefit the students and staff.

School Principal Amos Kupaloma in his remarks, said the shortage of community health workers and access to health services has always been a challenge for Western Province.

“We are trying to raise the standards of health facilities, and the school’s aim is to prepare more Community Health Workers to serve in these health facilities,” Kupaloma said.

The Principal said training competent CHWs with the vital skills and knowledge, will contribute to quality and cost-effective Primary Health Care services to rural and urban communities, thus fulfilling the PNG government’s National Health Plan.

He was grateful to the school’s Board of Directors, and development partners who have contributed to having this facility completed.

OTML Board Chairman Dr Roger Higgins, who was the guest of honour, was pleased that developments were taking shape in rural areas, and the school is using technology to enhance teaching and learning.

“I commend the school administration for bringing the CHW School this far, since its inception in 1976, and the current development will be valuable in teaching and training future professionals in medicine,” said Dr Higgins.

Dr Higgins encouraged the school to look after the facility and make good use of it.

The new E-library is part of its capacity building, to enable the CHW training school to become a Nursing College.

The school intends to commence its Nursing Diploma program in 2023.
