The Road Traffic Authority or RTA has collected a total of K20 million in revenue from its services and has remitted the funds to the Papua New Guinea Road Fund.
This marks the highest revenue collection for the RTA since its establishment in 2014. The authority has invested the money back into the Road Fund to support the maintenance and improvement of national roads throughout Papua New Guinea. The RTA generates the majority of its revenue through road user fees, specifically vehicle registrations and driver’s licenses.
RTA Acting Chief Executive Officer, John Daveona Avira extended his appreciation to Samuel Penias, Chairman of the PNG Road Fund Board and Secretary for the Department of Finance, for the ongoing partnership and support between both institutions.
Mr. Avira said today marked a proud and historic achievement for the RTA as they officially remitted the K20million to the PNG Road Fund.
“This is the first time in RTA’s history, since its establishment in 2014, that such a significant remittance has been made to the PNG Road Fund. It reflects a new era of accountability, sound financial management, and responsible governance,” said Avira.
The PNG Road Fund was established under the Road (Management and Fund) Act 2020 with the primary goal of overseeing the collection, disbursement, and management of funds designated for road safety, rehabilitation, and the maintenance of national road networks.
Meanwhile, the core function of the RTA is to monitor the road safety performance of the public road network, enforce land transport regulations, set service fees and charges, and assist the police in investigating road accidents.
The K20 million will be administered by the PNG Road Fund to support vital road maintenance projects across the country, paving the way for safer roads, better connectivity, and improved economic opportunities for the people of Papua New Guinea.
